After you learn how to distinguish between warp and weft, woven fabric is much easier to analyze. Both of these are necessary to create a woven fabric, but I always get confused the first time I look at a swatch. It’s particularly hard with plain fabric where both yarn sets are the same color and weight.
Warp yarns go the length of woven fabric. Weft goes across. If the sample still has a selvedge, you can see immediately that the warp runs in line with it, and the weft crosses it. This is why it is often better to practice on a labeled fabric swatch, than on a scrap with every edge cut. If there is no selvedge, you’ll have to rely on the fabric itself. Hold it up to light, preferably with a directional source, and peer at the fabric with a magnifying glass or textile loupe. Follow one yarn through multiple intersections, don’t just try to identify one from a short segment. In plain weave, yarns alternate going over and under the yarns perpendicular to them. It isn’t the visibility of the intersections, it’s following the yarn for long enough to determine its orientation.
If you want to mark one set of opposite edges with small removable labels, go ahead. You can gently tug the fabric in one direction, and then compare it with the other. Some woven fabrics have different degrees of stretch or stiffness in the warp and weft directions, but that’s a secondary clue, not a way to always identify the directions. Finishing, yarn type, density, and construction all contribute to the properties of a fabric.
An edge thread can give you some additional information. With a pair of fine tweezers, gently pull out a few threads of each direction (if possible). You can compare the thickness, twist, appearance, and consistency. You can’t assume that the warp and weft will look different, but taking them out of the fabric will help you recognize the yarn as part of the larger woven construction. Don’t damage a garment or anything precious, though, a practice swatch is plenty.
Finally, write down what helped you come to your conclusion. Did you use a selvedge, see the yarn direction, trace the yarns, follow an edge thread, or notice a difference in the behavior of the fabric? This makes the process of identification more like a standard procedure for fabric analysis, rather than guessing. If you don’t have enough evidence to confirm one direction or another, just say you don’t know, and take another look at your swatch.
Rather than simply knowing that the warp is lengthwise and the weft is crosswise, it’s much more useful to be able to analyze a new piece of woven fabric, determine the construction, and justify why the warp and weft are what you’ve claimed. Once you can do that, it will be a lot easier to assess fabric density, twill direction, distortion, and unevenness.
